Some months back, a good friend of mine asked if I'd do a few photos of him to use for promotion and book jackets. After not seeing him for years, it was a perfect time to reconnect. Many years back, I was his instructor and he was a student. Now, he's an extremely popular illustrator (mostly children's books but he's done a slew of other projects). He only gets better and better. I, on the other hand, struggle to stay motivated (but, maybe that's for another blog post). Russ Cox is a talented man, and a joy as a person. This image was simply him gesturing as he was telling me a story. I snapped him that way (hands spread) and placed the oversized pencil later. But, the inference is valid. He speaks softly but carries a big pencil.
